Have you ever wondered where eels are born?<\/p>\n

Eels lay their eggs thousands of miles from the Japanese coast, and die once it pours out its seed.
\nOnce the baby eel is out of its shell, it travels back to Japan to live in the country\u2019s fresh waters.<\/p>\n

In this new project by the Shizuoka Performing Arts Center, director Natsuki Ishigami brings together actors from SPAC and non-professional actors with roots in Brazil who live in Shizuoka prefecture, with the concept inspired by journey of these fascinating 100-million-year-old fish.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheatre is the only way to take up a story that someone else started long before I was born.\u201d<\/p>\n

◼️Who am I?<\/b><\/p>\n

My name is H\u00e9l\u00e8ne, and after almost five years\u2019 experience in theatre and national stages in France, I\u2019ve come to Japan to lose myself.
\nWelcomed by the SPAC teams for a fortnight, I had the chance to follow the setting up of the Open Studio of the Eel Project, a SPAC creation scheduled for Spring 2026, directed by Natsuki Ishigami.<\/p>\n

◼️Joining temporarily the Eel Project<\/b>
\nAfter a month travelling across Japan with my backpack, I\u2019m temporarily settling down on Nihondaira Hill in Shizuoka City, in the heart of the Shizuoka Performing Arts Park.
\nFounded in 1995, this immense green setting, about four times as big as Tokyo Dome, contains several performance halls, offices, accommodations, rehearsal rooms, and tea plantations to encircle it all.
\nToday I have an appointment at the rehearsal hall, a venue perfectly integrated into the hills landscape.<\/p>\n

When I get there, I can\u2019t wait to meet the team behind the Eel Project(The title of the project is \u201cEel Migration\u201d, but since the title of this porject is still tentative, we usually refer to it internally as the \u201cEel Project\u201d. ), and to immerse myself in the making process of a SPAC show: this Japanese institution, directed by Satoshi Miyagi since 2007, is internationally renowned for its creations as well as for the uniqueness of its functioning, as SPAC is a home to around 40 actors
\nDespite the excitement, I was still a little nervous, as my level in Japanese was very basic, and this production is deeply rooted in the history and territory of Shizuoka, mainly performed by locals.
\nLuckily for me, all my stress was relieved when I saw how I was welcomed by the team, with warm smiles and faces.
\nEven though I don\u2019t speak the language they speak, I feel that I will still be able to communicate as they communicate with each other beyond words.
\nEvery member of the team gives me an encouraging and reassuring smile: I can feel that the next two weeks are going to be very unique.<\/p>\n

◼️Eight days to prepare the Open Studio<\/b>
\nEel project is made up of two types of performers: professional actors employed by SPAC, and non-professional actors from Shizuoka.
\nWhile the local participants will be arriving in a few days, there are currently ten of us working together to set up the Open Studio, which will be held in eight days.<\/p>\n

This event, open only to a selected audience, will be a performance born of the various workshops and rehearsals carried out over the next few days by the whole team at the Shizuoka Performing Arts Park.
\nThis will give them \u201cthe opportunity to share the essence and destination of the project we are going to carry out together,\u201d says director Natsuki Ishigami on the SPAC blog.<\/p>\n

These two weeks in April to May, 2025 and the Open Studio will therefore be the beginnings of an artistic and human experience, conducted in harmonious communion between SPAC\u2019s artistic team and Hamamatsu\u2019s residents, from the province of Shizuoka.
\n\u201cDespite the time constraints and the distance,\u201d she continues, \u201cwe are embarking on a year-long journey that will enable us to create deep relationships with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

◼️The strength of teamwork<\/b>
\nSpeaking of deep relationships, there is no doubt that the rehearsal room is full of artistic connections. At the start of each day\u2019s work, the director invites everyone to share their state of mind, through a deep or fleeting thought, or a perspective on life or on the project. In this safe space, full of kindness and thoughtful human beings, I feel perfectly at ease to share\u2014in English, with the help of my translator and circle neighbor, Toshiki Sakanaka, a production staff of SPAC\u2014my feelings of the day: the emotion I felt when I realized by chance that I was missing the Easter celebrations, or my fear of an attack by wild animals in the heart of this park perched at the top of the hill on my first night.

\nEach member in the circle\u2014composer, actors, actresses, sound designer, set designer\u2014shares something of their own experience, whether a childhood memory or an everyday life episode, a casual fact or an intimate confession.
\nThis ritual makes each of us feel valued and heard: it helps build trust between us, supports and understands each other, and it really shows in the artistic work. In fact, every individual in the circle, with their skills and personality, contributes in their own way to the success of the show.<\/p>\n

Even though the work process is nourished by everyone\u2019s skills and singularity, all the Eel project\u2019s members also easily outgrown their function to participate in the creative process. I realized this even on my first day at work. I was amazed by how naturally and easily everyone is making suggestions, getting involved, and trying things out in all aspects of the performance.
\nTo illuminate the space, for example, In order to sink the audience into the deep ocean, we had to find a way of highlighting the sea glass which embodies the circling nature of life.
\nActors, designers, and members of the production team kept coming up with suggestions and solutions to achieve the desired effect, either by searching for ideas on the internet or by manipulating objects.
\nTheir intuitive reaction amazed me, as solving this problem had now become a collective challenge.<\/p>\n

Similarly, part of the performance will take place outdoors, and will be voiced by the non-professional performers who have not arrived yet.
\nFor staging these scenes, the members of the production team gave cues, adapted to the director\u2019s comments, and suggested ideas.
\nThey climbed onto the roof, grabbed the megaphone, and read lines in place of the future performers\u2014no one needed to be asked; they naturally proposed potential solutions.<\/p>\n

What struck me most during these first few days is how well they know and trust each other, and how this team of talented individuals relies on each other\u2019s vision to create a collective spirit that goes beyond their assigned roles and professional skills.
\nHere, the expression \u201cteamwork\u201d takes on its full meaning: collaboration is fluid, and everyone participates because everyone has something to bring to the group.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how I ended up as a percussionist on the project\u2014but I\u2019ll tell you more about that soon.<\/p>\n

Vous \u00eates-vous d\u00e9j\u00e0 demand\u00e9s o\u00f9 naissent les anguilles ?<\/p>\n

Les anguilles pondent \u00e0 des milliers de kilom\u00e8tres des c\u00f4tes japonaises, et d\u00e9c\u00e8dent une fois leur semence d\u00e9vers\u00e9e. Leurs petits, une fois sortis de leur coquille, font le trajet inverse pour revenir vivre dans les eaux du Japon.<\/p>\n

Dans ce nouveau projet du Shizuoka Performing Arts Center, la metteuse en sc\u00e8ne Natsuki Ishigami r\u00e9unit com\u00e9diens du SPAC et com\u00e9diens non-professionnels, ayant une attache avec le Br\u00e9sil et vivant dans la pr\u00e9fecture de Shizuoka, dans un projet inspir\u00e9 par le fascinant voyage de ces poissons symboliques, vieux de 100 millions d\u2019ann\u00e9es. <\/p>\n

\u201cLe Th\u00e9\u00e2tre est la seule mani\u00e8re de reprendre une histoire que quelqu\u2019un d\u2019autre a commenc\u00e9e bien avant ma naissance\u201d <\/p>\n

Qui suis-je ?<\/b><\/p>\n

Je m\u2019appelle H\u00e9l\u00e8ne, et apr\u00e8s presque cinq ans d\u2019exp\u00e9riences en th\u00e9\u00e2tre et sc\u00e8nes nationales en France, je suis venue me perdre au Japon. Recueillie par les \u00e9quipes du SPAC pendant deux semaines, j\u2019ai eu la chance de suivre la mise en place de l\u2019Open Studio du projet Eel migration, cr\u00e9ation du SPAC pr\u00e9vue au Printemps 2026, dirig\u00e9 par Natsuki Ishigami.<\/p>\n

Int\u00e9gr\u00e9e temporairement le projet d\u2019Eel migration<\/b><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s un mois \u00e0 traverser le Japon avec mon sac \u00e0 dos, je pose temporairement mes valises sur la colline de Nihondaira, \u00e0 Shizuoka City, au c\u0153ur du Shizuoka Performing Arts Park. Fond\u00e9 en 1995, cet immense \u00e9crin de verdure dont la superficie repr\u00e9sente pr\u00e8s de quatre fois celle du Tokyo D\u00f4me contient plusieurs salles de repr\u00e9sentation, des bureaux, des logements, des salles de r\u00e9p\u00e9tition et des plantations de th\u00e9 pour encercler le tout. Aujourd\u2019hui, j\u2019ai rendez-vous dans une salle de r\u00e9p\u00e9tition qui s\u2019int\u00e8gre parfaitement dans les collines du paysage.<\/p>\n

En arrivant sur place, je suis impatiente de rencontrer l\u2019\u00e9quipe qui porte le projet Eel Migration, ainsi que de m\u2019immerger dans le processus de fabrication d\u2019une production du SPAC : cette institution japonaise, dirig\u00e9e par Satoshi Miyagi depuis 2007, est renomm\u00e9e internationalement pour ses cr\u00e9ations comme pour la singularit\u00e9 de son \u00e9quipe compos\u00e9 d\u2019une quarantaine de com\u00e9diens.<\/p>\n

Malgr\u00e9 l\u2019excitation, je suis nerveuse car mon niveau de japonais reste \u00e9l\u00e9mentaire, et cette cr\u00e9ation, enracin\u00e9e dans l\u2019histoire et le territoire de Shizuoka, est port\u00e9e exclusivement par des com\u00e9diens du SPAC et des locaux. Bien heureusement pour moi, tout le stress est retomb\u00e9 en constatant le chaleureux accueil que m\u2019a offert toute l\u2019\u00e9quipe. Je ne parle pas la langue avec laquelle ils discutent, mais dans leur mani\u00e8re d\u2019\u00e9changer et de communiquer avec moi, je parviens \u00e0 comprendre les intentions, la teneur des \u00e9changes. Chaque membre m\u2019adresse des sourires chaleureux : je sens que les deux prochaines semaines vont \u00eatre passionnantes. <\/p>\n

Huit jours pour pr\u00e9parer l\u2019Open Studio<\/b><\/p>\n

Le projet Eel migration est compos\u00e9 de deux groupes d\u2019interpr\u00e8tes : des com\u00e9diens professionnels salari\u00e9s du SPAC, et des com\u00e9diens non-professionnels originaires de la pr\u00e9fecture de Shizuoka. <\/p>\n

Tandis que les participants amateurs arrivent quelques jours plus tard, nous sommes pour le moment dix \u00e0 nous retrouver pour mettre en place l\u2019Open Studio qui se tiendra dans huit jours. Cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement, ouvert uniquement \u00e0 un public restreint, prendra la forme d\u2019une performance n\u00e9e des diff\u00e9rents ateliers et r\u00e9p\u00e9titions men\u00e9s au Shizuoka Performing Arts Park ces prochains jours par l\u2019ensemble de l\u2019\u00e9quipe. Ce moment va leur permettre d\u2019avoir \u201cl\u2019opportunit\u00e9 de partager l\u2019essence et la destination du projet que nous allons mener ensemble\u201d, affirme la metteur en sc\u00e8ne Natsuki Ishigami sur le blog du SPAC. <\/p>\n

Ces deux semaines d’avril 2025 et l\u2019Open Studio qui viendra les conclure seront donc le pr\u00e9mices d\u2019une exp\u00e9rience artistique et humaine, men\u00e9e en communion entre les \u00e9quipes artistiques du SPAC et les participants amateurs. \u201cMalgr\u00e9 la contrainte de temps et la distance,\u201d continue t-elle, \u201cnous embarquons pour un voyage d\u2019un an qui va nous permettre de cr\u00e9er des relations profondes les uns avec les autres.\u201d <\/p>\n

La force du collectif<\/b><\/p>\n

D\u00e8s les premiers instants, il ne fait aucun doute que les relations entre les uns et les autres sont la clef de vo\u00fbte de la d\u00e9marche artistique. Commen\u00e7ant chaque journ\u00e9e de travail par un tour de table, la metteuse en sc\u00e8ne invite chacun \u00e0 partager son \u00e9tat d\u2019esprit, une pens\u00e9e, profonde ou fugace, une r\u00e9flexion, sur le projet ou l\u2019existence en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral. Dans cet espace de confiance, je me sens parfaitement \u00e0 l\u2019aise pour partager – en anglais, avec l\u2019aide de mon traducteur et voisin de cercle, Toshiki Sakanaka, salari\u00e9 du SPAC – mon ressenti du jour : l\u2019\u00e9motion que j\u2019ai ressenti quand j\u2019ai r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par hasard que je ratais les f\u00eates de P\u00e2ques, ou de ma crainte la premi\u00e8re nuit d\u2019une attaque de b\u00eates sauvages au coeur de ce parc encercl\u00e9 par une nature abondante. <\/p>\n

Chaque membre du cercle, compositrice, acteurs, actrices, designer sonore, sc\u00e9nographe, partage quelque chose de son v\u00e9cu, imm\u00e9diat ou lointain, intime ou anecdotique. Par ce rituel, chaque individu se sent alors entendu, valoris\u00e9 comme faisant partie d\u2019un tout : cela appuie ce sentiment qu\u2019ici, la r\u00e9ussite du collectif d\u00e9pend des comp\u00e9tences et individualit\u00e9s de chacun.<\/p>\n

Et cette dynamique, je la retrouve d\u00e8s mon premier jour de travail. Bien que chaque membre de l\u2019\u00e9quipe se soit pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 avec une fonction, celle-ci devient secondaire une fois dans la cr\u00e9ation artistique o\u00f9 chacun s\u2019investit, sugg\u00e8re des id\u00e9es, propose des pistes de r\u00e9flexion. <\/p>\n

Pour la mise en lumi\u00e8re de l\u2019espace, par exemple, il nous faut trouver un moyen de mettre en lumi\u00e8re le verre pil\u00e9, objet aux teintes oc\u00e9aniques qui t\u00e9moigne de la circularit\u00e9 de l\u2019existence. Acteurs, com\u00e9diens, membres de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de production encha\u00eenent les suggestions et les solutions pour parvenir \u00e0 l\u2019effet voulu. <\/p>\n

De la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re, la partie ext\u00e9rieure de la performance sera mise en voix par les interpr\u00e8tes amateurs, encore absents des r\u00e9p\u00e9titions ces premiers jours. Pour la mise en espace, les membres de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de production donnent la r\u00e9plique, s’adaptent aux commentaires de la metteuse en sc\u00e8ne. Montant sur le toit, prenant le m\u00e9gaphone, lisant les r\u00e9pliques \u00e0 la place des futurs interpr\u00e8tes, nul besoin de leur demander pour qu\u2019ils soient force de proposition. <\/p>\n

Travaillant ensemble depuis des ann\u00e9es, les \u00e9quipes du SPAC se connaissent bien et s\u2019inspirent des talents des uns et des autres pour cr\u00e9er un v\u00e9ritable esprit collectif qui d\u00e9passe les r\u00f4les assign\u00e9s dans une cr\u00e9ation th\u00e9\u00e2trale. <\/p>\n

Les journ\u00e9es de r\u00e9p\u00e9tition font l\u2019objet d\u2019\u00e9change continu entre les com\u00e9diens et l\u2019\u00e9quipe <\/p>\n
