From psychiatrist to theater man, genius Kuro Tanino, hits Shizuoka.
Nihondaira hideaway builds a creepy castle over roofless theater.

Kuro Tanino, playwright and director, presides over Niwa Gekidan Penino, based in Tokyo. He is a former psychiatrist who does things like turning the inside of his apartment into a theater hall. Already known for being a controversial artist, he is growing in popularity due to his eccentric literary style. He is quickly spreading his work area; merely 4 years after founding the theater group in 2000, he was asked to perform overseas.

This new piece will finally be shown after a 3 month seclusion at the Shizuoka Performing Arts Park, in the heart of Nihondaira Mountain. One of the characteristics of a Tanino piece is the intricate stage art, complete with contraptions. In all of his pieces until now, he has developed a “magical” stage, changing what seems to be a space of reality into a world of fantasy, figuratively throwing that space into a fictional world out-of-this-world. Who knows what will appear on our outside theater this time…

Tanino has made a point to entwine reality and fiction with the mysterious to form a delusion like world. In this world appear characters with strong desires, who are foolish in their fun. The world where these humans, who openly indulge in delusions with their desires completely exposed, may just perhaps be the world we live in.
