The Ventriloquists’ School

ジャン=ミシェル・ドープ 撮After graduating from the National Theatre School (INSAS) in Wallonia, d’HOOP was an active actor. He went on to found the company “Point Zéro” and converted an old vet school in Brussels into the performing arts space, “Les Vétés”. In 1993 their first production, “Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy” by GOMBROWICZ, was awarded best theatre production by COCOF (The French Community Commission). After this, the company moved and is now in residence at the “Théâtre de la Balsamine” in Brussels. D’Hoop’s other masterpieces include “The Madman and the Nun” by WITKIEWICZ and “Las tres viejas(Three Old Women)”by JODOROWSKY. Tragedy and a grotesque humour feature heavily in d’Hoop’s work and is used to explore and discover the monstrous elements of human nature.
 
Alejandro JODOROWSKY
ジャン=ミシェル・ドープ(左Born in Chile, 1929. JODOROWSKY left for France in 1953 and during his career as a travelling puppeteer met Marcel MARCEAU and became involved in theatre. In 1967 he completed his first feature length film, an adaptation of ARRABAL’s play “Fando y Lis”. In 1970 he achieved his masterpiece “El Topo”, and in 1973 “The Holy Mountain”, which was recorded to have a long run of a year and a half in America. He also writes novels, essays and poetry and comic strip (B.D.). Following his 2013 work “The Dance of Reality”, his new work “Endless Poetry” is a co-production with Chile, France and Japan and is due to be completed in 2016.

The Dolls of Wonderland

This is a comedy, but not a comedy in its usual sense. Dark and cold and like the universe, full of alienation and oppression. Metaphysical, like a dream, it can be described as a mysterious work. While manipulating life size dolls, actors play students at the strange “Ventriloquists’ School”. The face of the doll and their faces are somehow alike. Who is the “manipulator” and who is “the one manipulated”? Director of this work, Jean-Michel d’HOOP says that “first it is essential to think about the language itself”. He has continued to present each of his performances in different and creative ways. His philosophy is like the reflections of a multi-faceted mirror. The various places grounded within the story and the conditions of modern society are vividly reflected.

A philosophical fantasy and a comic tragedy

“Point Zéro” (Belgium), a company now gathering much attention, are known for GOMBROWICZ, Carole FRECHETTE. They learnt of the remarkable and talented cult figure Alejandro JODOROWSKY who made the popularly acclaimed films “El Topo” and “The Dance of Reality”. This film director, born in Chile in 1929, was involved in pantomime, met Marcel MARCEAU in Paris, and have directed more than one hundred productions. He is hugely accomplished in theatre. JODOROWSKY’s writing is rhythmic, savage, and full of creativity. This work emerged from the creative tension between JODOROWSKY and Point Zéro’s direct questioning of his script.

Synopsis

One day the hero Celeste, in a deserted alley, suffers from a “fall”. Celeste, confused by this sudden event and trying to escape, arrives at the eccentric Ventriloquists’ School. Here regulations are strict; no outside influence is allowed into the school and the students are monitored twenty-four hours. Celeste is enrolled at the school, and as he begins to manipulate the dolls he searches for the path he is meant to follow. But the doll increasingly starts to manipulate him who manipulates the doll…

The Tale of Komachi Told by the Wind

イ・ユンテクBorn in Busan, Korea in 1952. As a poet, playwright, theatre director and scriptwriter he engages in artistic activities that branch in all directions. In 1986 he founded his theatre troupe, “Theater troupe georipae” (TTG) and has since gone on to earn numerous prestigious Korean Theatre awards. Currently based in Miryang, he has built the Miryang Theatre Village, which is the base for all TTG company members. Within this theatre community, he works with his company and continues to carry out writing activities and experiment with theatre. His performances, created using his own distinctive as well as traditional theatrical methods, are internationally renowned. He has been invited several times for Spring Arts Festival Shizuoka. And he has directed “Robinson and Crusoe” for SPAC since 2008.

Introduction

“Sublime” or “vulgar”?
OHTA Shogo’s world is revived.
Hear an effusive cry that comes from the soul!

OHTA Shogo occupies a unique position in the Japanese underground theatre movement. “The Tale of Komachi told by the wind” by OHTA is the work that won KISHIDA Drama Award and is characterized by the protagonist, an old woman, that does not speak a word. The work itself has a script that has been written down, however these are “unspoken words” that, for the characters, are “words they hope to emit from the bottom of their hearts”. Instead of words prone to stereotypes, clichés or fixed ideas, extremely slow bodily movements are used. The word “silent drama” is often used to describe OHTA’s works which represent the realness of human life. It is also the true value of OHTA, who ran with the age of the Japanese underground theatre movement.

Japanese-Korean cultural relations are intricate.
Finally realized in this work,
A new Asian stage.

Theatre troupe georipae are known for their “epic realism” and their very distinctive style. The theatre company director, LEE Yuntaek, is a master of Korean theatre. He has attracted many audiences in Shizuoka with his masterpieces, such as “Robinson and Crusoe” at SPAC. In this work he uses colorful elements of Korean traditional performing arts, including Deotboikki (Korean traditional performing form that includes masks dancing), Namdo Sori (southern folk song) and the shaman ritual ceremony “Gut”, giving a new breath of life to OHTA Shogo’s text and unleashing the words that were never spoken. A mutual exchange as well as a fusion of Japanese and Korean culture, it could be said that this is the birth of a new kind of Asian performing arts.

Synopsis

The story of an old woman who lives alone in a cheap apartment. Awaking and making a breakfast of instant noodles, she remembers a love story in her youth. At one point, her memory is strongly revived when a captain, dressed in military uniform, who once loved her deeply and with passion, appears before her very eyes. Next, in her illusion, she enjoys a number of intense, silent and secret love meetings with a neighboring house’s son. However reality begins to erode this old woman’s world. Floating in the space between dreams and reality, an ambiguous amount of time passes and in the end the old woman is left alone once again.

Issam BOU KHALED
Lebanese actor, writer and theatre director. Issam’s work is defined by conflicting elements, for example sharp comedy and pathetic tragedy, that coexist within his pieces. Therefore his work is often seen as a mirror of Lebanese society, reflecting its complicated dynamism. Issam is best known for his trilogy “Maaarch”(2004), “Banafsaj”(09) and ”Archipel”(99), which through an absurdist humor, depicts war as something grotesque. In addition he founded the deaf and dumb theatre company, « Décibel(dB) » and went on to create “Monde sans voix”(07). He served as artistic director of the Beirut theatre from 2009 to 2012. During this time his company « Décibel(dB) » performed at the theatre. He has also performed in countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Egypt, Tunisia and Jordan. As a film actor he has appeared in the film ”Carlos”(10) directed by Olivier ASSAYAS and has also appeared in numerous works both at home and abroad.”
 
Fadi ABI SAMRA
Lebanese actor. In 1990 he graduated from Lebanon University with a master’s degree in theatre studies. Since 1987 he has been working as both a stage and film actor. He has gained popularity in middle eastern TV dramas and together with Issam has also starred in the film “Carlos” as well as an adaptation of “Waiting for Godot” directed by Roger ASSAF.

This is a new “Godot”?!
A surreal two men play
By a popular actor from the Middle East.

A conversation that could at first appear seemingly meaningless reveals the desperateness of the everyday of a long civil war, and a nation battered by deep-rooted religious conflict comes in to view. Using the situation of BECKETT’s “Waiting for Godot”, this play is centered on the personality and social background of the actor and is a polished piece that is made up of layers of improvisation. While waiting for that someone that never comes, the two continue to talk. The rhythm of the conversation is exquisite and one is quickly drawn in to a world of absurd words. In Beirut, even with only forty-eight hours notice, this production that is said to always perform to a full house, will come to Shizuoka! It can be seen as a valuable opportunity to learn about Middle Eastern culture.

Beirut: the cultural crossroads that ties Asia, Africa and Europe. This leading cultural city of the Middle East has deep scars from civil war and still continues to be buffeted between Syria and Israel. Now, the artists who grew up during the civil war have attracted the attention of various art scenes around the world. The feeling of attachment to their homeland, which is depicted through black humor and the form of the absurd, is a feature of their work that makes it strong and solid. The directors of this work Issam BOU KHALED and Fadi ABI SAMRA are also actors and using their own history draw out and satirize the situation of their homeland. This work is receiving rave reviews both at home and from abroad.

Synopsis

In a street in Beirut, two shabbily dressed men spread open a newspaper. They look hungrily at the articles, which for some reason are all obituaries. “There’s a man that was killed in a car crash.” “Was he hit by the car?” “Seems like it was an accident.” “What type of car? What year?” “I don’t know, but there’ll probably be food at the funeral.” “Compared with the doctor’s funeral, I wonder which will have better food?” The two argue over which funeral to attend and their conversation begins to escalate. At every opportunity, the argument revives with another confrontation and the complexity of this argument can be seen to reflect contemporary Lebanon. Eventually, the two men realize something…

西尾さんプロフィール写真_撮Playwright, director, leader of Bird Park. Born in 1985. After a childhood in Malaysia she researched TERAYAMA Shuji and OTA Shogo at university, and founded Bird Park in 2007. Since then she has handled all of the group’s scriptwriting and direction. She was nominated for the 58th KISHIDA Kunio Drama Award. Furthermore, her major works include “A Paper Balloon” written by KISHIDA Kunio and “Invisible Neighbors (inspired by “8”)” which was performed at Festival/Tokyo 14.
 
SUZUKI Ichirota

小_鈴木Director of Large, Small & Ref. Co. Ltd. Born in 1977. Soon after graduation from high-school, he moved to US and then UK. He began his career as an artist during the time in London. Nearly 10 years in UK, he then moved back to Japan and joined Creative Support Let’s (NPO) in charge of project planning such as exhibition, talk session, community space management, and human resource education program. In 2013, co-founded Large, Small & Ref. Co. Ltd. with an architect OHIGASHI Tasuku, mainly in charge of project planning, management and art direction. Earned MA Fine Arts at Central St. Martins College of Art & Design (Byam Shaw School of Art).
 
OHIGASHI Tasuku
小_大東The representative director of Large, Small & Ref. Co. Ltd. and Architect. After graduating from economic department of Kansai University, he then went on to work for a building contractor. A few years later, he began his career as an architect in Osaka. In 2011, moved the base to Hamamatsu to set up his own architect office, which deals with local project as well as architectural design. In 2013, co-founded Large, Small & Ref. Co. Ltd. with SUZUKI Ichirota.
 
Bird Park
A theatre company formed in 2007 by NISHIO Kaori as a playwright and director with MORI Sumire as an actress and designer, in order to explore the existence of minor matters that is slightly off-edge but still shows its presence in the society. Their work delves into space and language, always approaching subjects from a slightly oblique perspective to shine a gentle spotlight. They have created performances at a range of local sites such as a former warehouse, an old Japanese house and a disused shop in Tottori, Kitakyushu, Hiroshima and Osaka. And they have won many awards in various cities like Osaka, Hiroshima, Tokyo and so on.
 
Large, Small & Ref. Co. Ltd.
Established in 2013 by OHIGASHI Tasuku and SUZUKI Ichirota. They flexibly deal with complex matters from project planning, direction and management to architectural design. Based on their belief that even the most distant issues in our society share the same ground, they try to introduce unique development for the project by combining different disciplines and heterogeneities.

A strange city walk
A play in which you can “participate”! 

“I want to walk the streets that I do not know”. What is it that stirs human hearts? Although the reason for a journey is different depending on the person, if you love theatre, perhaps there is a time when you have travelled for theatre, because “I want to watch this play, because it is only here and now that I can see this”. In times past, in large towns there has been a theatre. This was not only a place of exchange for the people who lived there but also became a place for travelers to learn about the history and culture of the land. However with the development of transportation journeys have become more convenient. While many carry their feet to this festival, there is no time to learn about the city of Shizuoka, and there are many that simply return home without doing so. But now…?

One may say, I came to watch theatre and I have to do fieldwork? But no, this is a genuine “theatre” piece that layers productions from various places. NISHIO Kaori of theatre unit “Bird Park” (who has continued to organize site specific creative activities) along with Shizuoka architecture, design and event planning company “Large, Small and Ref. Co. Ltd.” will challenge themselves in a work where the town itself becomes the stage. It could almost be described as a theatrical version of a role playing game. What kind of adventure awaits?

林麗珍プロフィール写真 LinBorn in Taiwan in 1950. LIN Lee-Chen is the Choreographer and Artistic Director of Legend Lin Dance Theatre. Over forty-five years, she has worked on numerous dance pieces, leading the Taiwanese dance world. In 1995, she founded Legend Lin Dance Theatre and participated in some major international festivals where she earned her esteemed reputation. In 2002, she was selected as among one of the eight most significant contemporary choreographers in the world by ARTE, an important arts and culture television channels in Europe. In 2008, Legend Lin Dance Theatre participated in the Beijing Olympic Festival. It was the first time that a Taiwanese performance group received an official invitation to perform at National Centre for the Performing Arts, Beijing. After “Miroirs de Vie”, “Hymne aux Fleurs qui Passent”, she finally completed “Song of Pensive Beholding”; the trilogy of her tribute to Heaven, Earth, and Man thus realized. She has also staged performances at Festival d’Avignon, Théâtre National de Chaillot, Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, Chekhov International Theatre Festival, Festival Internacional Cervantino, etc.

The history of Legend Lin Dance Theatre is very much the story of its artistic director and choreographer LIN Lee-chen. A graduate of the Chinese Culture University, LIN founded the repertory company for the purpose of presenting large-scale performance works that reflect the spirit and culture of her native Taiwan. Inspired by local religious rituals and ceremonial rites celebrating the rhythms of nature and our place in it, the artistry of the Legend Lin Dance Theatre blends a lush visual aesthetics with a brilliantly original choreography that gives new meaning to the phrase “poetry in motion.” A show-stealer at the Festival d’Avignon in 1998, “Miroirs de Vie” was inspired by the Jiao, a Daoist open-air ceremony held during the Ghost Festival in the seventh lunar month, when the angry spirits of the un-cared-for dead are temporarily allowed to return to the world of the living. Having grown up in the harbor town of Keelung, where the Jiao has been practiced for centuries, LIN was a frequent witness to the power and beauty of this appeasement ceremony, and her “Miriors de Vie” is an aesthetic tribute to this local cultural tradition. In its many appearances overseas, the company has won praise from critics and audiences alike. Its “Hymne aux Fleurs qui Passent”, which pays tribute to the cycle of the seasons and the complementary principles of Yin and Yang, garnered the Prix du Public at the 9th Biennale de la Danse de Lyon in 2000 and broke attendance records at the Festival de Otoño the following year. The work was subsequently performed in Italy, Germany, Austria, U.S. and Mexico, bringing Legend Lin Dance Theatre onto the world stage. In 2009, invited by the National Theater & Concert Hall, National Performing Arts Center (former National Chiang Kai-Shek Cultural Center) as Flagship production of the year, Legend Lin Dance Theatre presents the final work of the series, “Song of Pensive Beholding” after nine years. Inspired by watching the eagles at Keelung Harbor, LIN Lee-chen’s hometown, the choreographer weaves her original tribal myth with a pensive eye, reflecting on the harm done to our environment and ourselves by human avarice. This long-awaited piece completes the trilogy of Lin’s tribute to Heaven, Earth, and Man, and once again stuns the world stage. With this production, Legend Lin paid its first visit to one of the most prestigious theater in the world — Théâtre national de Chaillot in Paris in 2011, and also made a big success in Hong Kong World Culture Festival, Teatro Alfa in Brazil, Chekhov International Theatre Festival in Moscow and Festival Internacional Cervantino in Mexico in the following years.

Like the truth of the universe.

Legend Lin Dance Theatre was founded in 1995 and has since created three pieces of work within a single series. They ensure the positive and negative mutually support each other and form a pluralistic universe in which people, spirit and god, can coexist. “Song of Pensive Beholding”, which will be staged this time, is the final part of a trilogy, and has been created over a period of nine years. Through the eyes of the eagle that flies in the sky, this piece looks mercifully upon desire and the flow of the soul. It completes a journey that unlocks the myth of the body. Overwhelming in its display of the body’s strength and sophisticated and beautiful placement, within the piece, like a mandala, are conflicting elements that coexist. It draws into one’s mind solemnness and harmony that has been scattered over many years, and evokes an emotion similar to liberation.

LIN Lee-Chen is artistic director of Legend Lin Dance Theatre that has won praises in the world. She is also a costume designer who can create the elaborate world. Holding the belief that the soul of predecessors dwells in the crafts that they left, she skillfully captures these colors and designs into the visual elements of her work. While Taiwanese locality is the origin of the piece, LIN did not stay in this local consciousness. While creating this dance work, her world goes beyond the frame of dance. Born out of a long and intense creation process, one cannot help but watch this gem. This piece is both very traditional and highly avant-garde. It is a depiction of whom you pray to for life’s happiness, and by watching, your soul will be led back to your inner earth.

中島諒人(クレジットなしでNAKASHIMA started in theatre while studying law at the University of Tokyo. After the graduation, he founded and led a theatre company in Tokyo. He has won the Grand-Prix Prize in 2003 Toga Director’s Contest. Between 2004 and 2006, he was a member of Shizuoka Performing Arts Center (SPAC). From 2006, he moved to Tottori to start BIRD Theatre Company. With the potential power of theatre, a cultural device with a history of more than two-thousand years, he tries to create a place for theatre in society and to raise general recognition towards what theatre can do.

An ambitious work by Bird Theatre Company
And on the topic of performances in Inu-jima

“Can we reconstruct <> our life that has been dominated by the system and economy?” This mysterious phrase is one reason why the Bird Theatre Company chose contemporary Swiss playwright DÜRRENMATT’s drama. Set in the ancient city of Babylon, it is a political drama in which a story of God, the king, the beggar and the masses unfolds. What is it a human needs in order to live “freely” in society? This usually heavy theme is deployed in a comical “pop social drama”. This work premiered in the Inu-jima, Seto Inland Sea, and was staged outside. This time, in a venue with condensed atmosphere, the work undergoes further transfiguration.

A theater company that aims to build a theatre
Holding an international perspective

NAKASHIMA Makoto was also a member of SPAC and a director from 2004 for one and a half years. Since 2006 he has transferred the base for his theatre company to his homeland Tottori. He converted a primary school and kindergarten that were no longer being used into a theatre and founded “Bird Theatre Company”. Once a year, for the “Bird Theatre Festival” held in Kano, Tottori, performing arts pieces are invited from all over the world (in 2011 SPAC also participated with “Medea”). The theatre festival can be enjoyed by children and adults, locals as well as international visitors and is known by many audiences. Hurdling all kinds of walls, this theatre is one that is seen as a regional resource. “Bird Theatre Company” reconsiders what one can do for society and is a company you won’t be able to keep your eyes off in the future.

Synopsis

Set about four thousand years ago, ninety kilometers south of now Baghdad, Iraq, in “The ancient city of Babylon” that was built across the Euphrates river. In this city, where the king has prohibited begging, an angel brings a girl. The girl’s name is Kurrubi and the hand of God has just made her. She is supposed to be sent to the beggar Akki who is “the most pathetic and insignificant man on earth”, but she falls in love with another beggar who was beaten by Akki in a fight. People are surprised at Kurrubi’s beauty and innocent heart however, and try to make her the wife of the king…

After graduating from l’Ecole des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg, JEANNETEAU went on to study theatre at l’École du Théâtre National de Strasbourg. In 1989 he met director Claude REGY. JEANNETEAU went on to produce all the set designs for REGY’s productions for fifteen years. Since 2001 he has collaborated with Marie-Christine SOMA and they directed pieces by Strindberg, Racine and Keene. In 2005 he directed “Blasted” by Sarah KANE at the Strasbourg National Theatre. At SPAC he directed “Blasted” in 2009 and “The Glass Menagerie” by Tennessee WILLIAMS in 2011. He has been the artistic director of Studio-Théâtre de Vitry since 2008.

Introduction

A dark night in the forest of Nihon-Daira
Experience the serene world of MAETERLINCK!

In Japan the image of MAETERLINCK is strongly governed by his fairytale works such as “Blue Bird”. Last year at Festival d’Avignon, however, SPAC staged “Intérieur” (directed by Claude REGY), a work depicting the darkness and despair within humans and such his manner made him famous in European literary world. In this drama silence and quiet have important meanings. The work will be staged in the mountains of Nihon-Daira, wrapped in the darkness of the night. The audience is guided deep into the forest as cold air rolls in. Surrounded by the jet-black trees, the play quietly begins. Depending on “voices and signs” the piece rises among the audience and depicts the serene abyss between life and death. You become one among the herd of the blind, it is literally “a dramatic experience”.

Revising the French premiered version
JEANNETEAU asks:
What is the “Blind Spot” that lurks in our minds.

JEANNETEAU, also a scenographer, has a strong connection with SPAC, having directed two works, and his talent has been clearly demonstrated. The startling stage conversion that was realized in “Blasted” where an elegant room, in the blink of an eye, transformed to ruins, and in “The Glass Menagerie” where the delicate sway of crystal clear thin cloth depicted folds in characters’ hearts. His “The Blind” premiered in Paris. In the French version, a high concentration of smoke produced a state of zero visibility and the piece gained much attention. In the Shizuoka version, using the natural forest of Nihon-Daira that surrounds Shizuoka Performing Arts Park, we will approach MAETERLINCK’s world as it is in the original as well as explore in depth the psychology of the characters. What will be the fate of the blinds who have been left behind?

Synopsis

An old priest leads twelve blind people from a charity hospital into the forest of an island in a northern province. Some of the blind were born unable to see, some grew old and became unable to see, all have different reasons for why they have lost the ability to see light. Among the luscious ancient trees of the forest, they are waiting patiently for someone. The old priest who led them there is gone. Even when the time comes for them to return home, he does not come. They listen with strained ears to try and learn more about their surroundings, but despite their efforts, they are unable to discover anything. Left in this state of unknowing, their anxiety begins to deepen until, distantly, they hear the sound of someone’s footsteps moving closer…

Two Ladies

 
KARA Juro
Born in Tokyo in 1940. Graduated from Meiji University with a degree in theatre.
He founded “Jokyo Gekijou (Situation Theatre)” in 1963. With spirit and uniqueness, he experimented with outdoor theatre, which is how the small theatre movement began. In 1967, in Shinjuku Hanazono Shrine, the red tent was built for the first time and “Koshimaki Osen” was staged. Subsequent activities continued around the tent performances, as well as performances overseas. In 1970 KARA won the KISHIDA Drama Award with “Shojo Kamen” and in 1982 the AKUTAGAWA Award as well as other awards with “A Letter from Young Sagawa”. In 1988 he formed “Karagumi”. He has led the troupe and has continued at a pace where he is staging at least two new works a year. He has worked as an actor in theatre and film, and in addition appeared in dramas and commercials.

 
MIYAGI Satoshi
Satoshi MiyagiBorn in Tokyo in 1959. Director. General Artistic Director of SPAC – Shizuoka Performing Arts Center. Studied aesthetics from ODASHIMA Yushi, WATANABE Moriaki and HIDAKA Hachiro at Tokyo University, and founded the new theatre company KU NA’ UKA in 1990. Being active in the international industry, his directing, which fuses contemporary textual interpretations with physical techniques and patterns of Asian theatre, receives high acclaims both domestically and abroad. He was appointed as the General Artistic Director of SPAC in April of 2007. Along with presentations of his own works, he invites pieces that sharply cut away at modern society from all over the world. Furthermore, he has started new projects aimed at the youth of Shizuoka, putting efforts into presenting theatre as “a window to the world”. In June 2009, he directed “Two Ladies” written by KARA Juro at Spring Arts Festival Shizuoka. In July 2014, he was invited to the Festival d’Avignon and received excellent reviews for his staging of “Mahabharata” at “la carrière de Boulbon”. He is best known for such pieces as “Medea”, “Mahabharata”, “Peer Gynt” etc. In 2004 he received the 3rd Asahi Performing Arts Award. In 2005 he received the 2nd Asahi Beer Art Award.

Drifting between madness and sanity
The love and hate of Aria

The Noh masterpiece “Aoi no Ue”, which follows the dark emotion of the living spirit of “ex-girlfriend” Lady Rokujo who torments Hikaru Genji’s wife, is skilfully interwoven with CHEKHOV’s “Sixth Room”. KARA Juro has created two women (“Aoi” a daughter from a good family and the beautiful patient “Rokujo”), the psychiatrist Koichi and their strange love triangle. “Aoi no Ue” is originally based on “The Tale of Genji”, and the well-known “cart dispute” scene in “The Tale of Genji” is replaced by a scene on the Fuji Speedway. Koichi, indecisive, intelligent and handsome, is tossed between Aoi and Rokujo. KARA Juro’s work is unique and unexpected. It is Rokujo’s outpouring of love from insanity, which finally helps the man who lost everything…
 
Shadows lurking at the back of the festival,
That’s what underground theatre is!
This legendary play is revived!

KARA Juro, writer and director of underground theatre has grabbed audiences since the 1960s. In the center of a town he suddenly erects a red tent and using this kind of stage style, he draws audience’s attention. The dialogue of his plays is poetical and musical and can only be described as the work of a genius that has an immortal shine. Through the success of Festival d’Avignon, MIYAGI has gathered attention from all over the world and has continued to embrace the small theatre spirit. While deeply respecting the premiere of “Two Ladies”, which starred ISHIBASHI Renji and MIDORI Mako and was set in a tiny enclosed space, this time the play will be lead outside into the space of the ancient forest in Nihon-Daira.

Synopsis

On the sandy beaches of Izu stands a mental hospital where a doctor named Koichi works. Koichi is deeply in love with his fiancé Aoi however one day at the hospital, the patient Rokujo speaks to Kouichi. “You!”, she exclaims to him, and then hands him the keys to her apartment. A while later, on the Fuji speedway, Kouichi and the pregnant Aoi are on a date. During the date Aoi leaves her seat and Rokujo, who has been discharged from the hospital, appears and tells Kouichi that there has been some trouble with Aoi’s brother. From this point onwards Aoi’s physical condition begins to deteriorate and she develops an obsession with Rokujo. Before long the personalities of the two women intertwine, and Kouichi becomes unable to understand and see the true figure of his wife.

Introduction

What is art, what is a theatre?
MIYAGI Satoshi takes on this challenge.
A vast social criticism work.

The original story was the novel “Mephisto” by Klaus MANN in 1936. The novel was modeled on Germany’s best actor at that time, GRÜNDGENS, who was also the artistic director of the national theatre. This book was eventually banned from the state. In the 1980s the French theatre company, Théâtre du Soleil, brought the novel to the stage and the Hungarian director SZABÓ adapted the novel to film. This social criticism work, through the figure of this genius actor who is at the mercy of his age, questions, “What is theatre? What is art?” The adaptation of the up and coming playwright Tom LANOYE is freer and bolder. As a play within a play, this work is constructed of different scenes from famous dramas. MIYAGI Satoshi, who continues to challenge himself, together with strong actors of SPAC, premieres this social criticism work in Japan!

Masterpieces in drama and famous dialogues…
An intense love for theatre.
A millefeuille of masterpieces?

The grief and despair of Gretchen at the sight of the man who she loves turning in to a “devil” (“Faust” by GOETHE), the prayer of Hecuba dedicated to the fallen Troy ( “Hecuba” by EURIPIDES) and so on. Famous scenes from masterpieces of all eras unfold. Through each scene that is played out, the sentiment of the characters, tossed about eras, become distinct through the lines of these plays within the play. The monologue of “Richard III” by SHAKESPEARE is reminiscent of the Nazi propaganda minister. His historical speech is strangely layered over Trigorin and Nina’s conversation (“Seagull” by CHEKHOV). This production sees MIYAGI’s direction on new ground. This stage is dedicated to all the people who love theatre.

Synopsis

It’s 1932 and rehearsals of Hamlet are taking place at the National Theatre in Berlin, Germany. Then, news that Nazis have won a landslide victory in the national election and upset the company members. The star actress Rebecca senses the danger and flees to another country. A man appears, who would become Minister of Culture in the new government. He invites the director Kurt, who was also a famed actor for his role in “Mephisto”, to become the new artistic director of the theatre, instead of a leftist activist named Victor. Kurt, by accepting this offer, believes he must protect the theatre, must protect art, however he is gradually swallowed by the waves of the era.
