A scandalous love affair that is a sidesplitting comedy?
SPAC will launch an all-out attack to make you laugh out loud in the new year!

Der Rosenkavalier is known as a timeless masterpiece opera. Replacing its setting with the glamorous days of early Westernization in Japan, as symbolized by the Rokumeikan building, the opera is reborn as a lighthearted theatrical work with the first joint direction by MIYAGI Satoshi and TERAUCHI Ayako, and the music by NEMOTO Takuya, a master of all music genres from classic to modern music. Experience your first laughs of the year with this slapstick love comedy of aristocrats performed by the actors accompanied by live music!

Story line
The Marschallin is deeply in love with her young lover, Octavian, but she knows that such happiness will not last long. On the other hand, Octavian is appointed as Der Rosenkavalier for Baron Ochs, and as such, delivers a silver rose to Sophie, a young woman who has no choice but to marry the Baron, a very annoying man.
What will you witness? A fling, a marriage of convenience, love at first sight, or stolen love? Who will give up and who will bring this curious romance to fruition?

MIYAGI Satoshi

Born in Tokyo in 1959, after studying aesthetics at Tokyo University under ODASHIMA Yushi, WATANABE Moriaki and HIDAKA Hachiro, he founded the KU NA’ UKA theatre company in 1990 and soon began staging plays overseas as well as in Japan. As a result, Miyagi’s work — in which he often fuses contemporary textual interpretations with physical techniques and patterns of Asian theatre — has long been acclaimed both at home and far beyond. Indeed, in 2004 he received the 3rd Asahi Performing Arts Award, and the next year the 2nd Asahi Beer Art Award. Since taking up his position with SPAC in April 2007, Miyagi has staged many of his own works — including “Medea”, the Hindu epic “Mahabharata”, and “Peer Gynt” — and has invited artists from abroad to present pieces casting a keen eye on the modern world as they see it. In line with his aim to make theatre “a window to the world,” he has also started a new SPAC-based project aimed at the youth of Shizuoka. In 2014, Miyagi was invited to the Festival d’Avignon, where he received excellent reviews for his open-air version of the Hindu epic “Mahabharata” staged in La Carrière de Bourbon. Following that landmark achievement, the festival extended the honor of inviting Miyagi to present a Buddhist interpretation he created of the ancient Greek mythological tragedy “Antigone” as its super-prestigious opening program for 2017. On that occasion, which was the first time an Asian play had ever been selected to launch the festival, Miyagi’s exalted “stage” was the open-air Cour d’honneur du Palais des papes (the Honor Court of the Palace of Popes). By the play’s end, those towering medieval stone walls were ringing out with long and splendid standing ovations welcoming the work’s director and creator along with SPAC’s actors and staff — while more than 60 European media all gave great reviews. In 2018, he received the 68th Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize of Drama. Also he recieved “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” from the Ministry of Culture of France in 2018.

 

TERAUCHI Ayako

26_寺内亜矢子 sMs. TERAUCHI became involved in plays in 1997 in KU NA’ UKA Theater Company. Since the company entered a fallow period in 2007, she has been based at SPAC and appearing on stages in Japan and abroad, while also being engaged in physical expression education at Tokyo University of the Arts. She is an internationally active, multitalented professional involved in all aspects of performing arts creation, including acting, directing, musical performance, musical construction, dramaturgy, interpretation, and translation. She worked as a SPAC director for several plays, including Ootto Eetto Eejanaika (2020) , Chushingura 2021 (co-direction), Three Primary Colors (2022), The Lady Aoi(2023)

 
NEMOTO Takuya

TAKUYA NEMOTO obtained an MMus in conducting from Tokyo University of the Arts. As a student, he had grasped various theatrical works in their original languages, such as English, German, French, Italian, Czech, and even Latin. His singular capability for diction coaching makes him an integral presence in the industry, having been already engaged for hundreds of performances by New National Theatre Tokyo and other key opera companies in Japan. He earned a diploma in basso continuo at Conservatoire National Supérieur de Lyon (France). He also plays cembalo in The Jugong Boys (a duo with a Baroque cellist) and others. As a composer, he placed third (no first/second place winner) in the Ensemble category at the 3rd Tokyo Katsushika Composition Competition 2015. In June 2016, his trio Nemo Concertato (with sax and voice) released the CD book Shuntaro for Adults (Artes Publishing) dedicated to Shuntaro Tanigawa’s poetry. His first opera Kagetora, commissioned by the Myoko Culture Promotion Organization, premiered in December 2018 and was met with accolades.

Director’s Profile
Jean LAMBERT-WILD

Lambert-wild was born in 1972 in Réunion, a French island territory located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of South India. He is a playwright, director, and actor. Lambert-wild has cultivated his poetic power of imagination through the unique environment of his upbringing, and his magical knack for direction has become highly esteemed. His young age belies his long and impressive history of supervising a wide array of national theater centers across France. Some of his most representative works include a fantasized autobiographical epic titled “The Hypogeum (The Underground Tomb),” “The Molting,” a piece he created alongside indigenous peoples of Brazil, an adaptation of “Waiting for Godot,” and more. In 2014, Lambert-wild received the ‘Chevalier’ (knight) medallion prize from the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. To date, SPAC has presented three programs directed by him: “The Goat of Monsieur Seguin” (2011), “Splendor and Lassitude of Captain Iwatani Izumi” (2014), “Richard III – Loyalty binds me”(2018) and, YOTARO AU PAYS DES YŌKAIS(2019,2020).

Chushingura 2021

Citizen participants and SPAC actors, 50 in total, are going on a raid…Really?!

Indecisive and just going with the flow—a typical Japanese atmosphere.
A chance to hear the special inside story of “Chushingura” in the Reiwa era!

The version of “Chushingura” (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers) written by HIRATA Oriza in 1999 features no stuffy old language. In a peaceful time where bushido has long been forgotten, the remaining samurai, referring to one another simply as “Tanaka-san” or “Suzuki-san,” think about what to do after their master impulsively attempts to kill Kira. This plain-language version of “Chushingura” subverts the tropes of historical samurai dramas and offers many findings about modern life.

Plays may not remain in a tangible form, like a painting, novel, or film, but surely they remain inside people’s hearts. Precisely because of this intangible form, people have long tried to somehow convey the emotions inside their hearts to the next generation, resulting in the 2500-year history of plays. I sometimes imagine that perhaps this act of continuously inheriting something intangible has been the key to human survival. I strongly believe that this “Chushingura 2021” has great significance as a part of such act.
 This version of “Chushingura” was written by Mr. HIRATA Oriza for Theater Olympics in 1999. After experiencing the play in 1999, and a repeat performance in 2004, now I am serving the role of general director and have entrusted the direction of the play to Mr. MAKIYAMA and Ms. TERAUCHI. They are going to gain the same precious experience that I did 22 years ago by pushing myself to 120%. The stage for the play has been changed from the GRANSHIP Main hall to the Open Air Theatre “UDO” at Shizuoka Performing Arts Park, so we had to come up with new ideas from scratch. Just like Mt. Fuji emerging from behind the clouds, the results will appear gradually. Please join the participants to witness the birth of something new. I am sure that you will enjoy this wonderful play.

Citizens from a wide range of generations, from teenagers to people in their 80s, gathered under a common desire to create a performance with other people. Some of them are acting on stage for the first time, some became captivated by plays after participating in SPAC’S human resources development project, and some have abundant experience of acting in various plays.
Fifty performers, including SPAC actors, join together in dialogue, dancing, and a live percussion performance, creating their own unique “Chushingura 2021” in an outdoor theatrical space.

Ms. TERAUCHI became involved in plays in 1997 in KU NA’ UKA Theater Company. Since the company entered a fallow period in 2007, she has been based at SPAC and appearing on stages in Japan and abroad, while also being engaged in physical expression education at Tokyo University of the Arts. She has many talents in addition to being an actor, engaging internationally in such activities as the composition of music performances, direction of plays, and interpretation. She worked as a SPAC director for several plays, including “Ootto Eetto Eejanaika” during the Open-air Performing Arts Festival 2020 in Kakegawa.

After joining the Theatrical Play Collegium at Waseda University, Mr. MAKIYAMA joined theater company TOKYO ORANGE. Since leaving that company, he has been working as a playwright and director as a one-man freelance unit. He joined SPAC from the play “Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan” (directed by MIYAGI Satoshi) and has been directing small works, including “Nakahara Chuya; Utsu Mo Hateru Mo Hibana No Inochi” and “Takamura Koraro; Chieko Sho.”

Ms. TANAKAWA is a stage musician. Her activity includes composing music for plays, and also proving music performance instruction to actors. Her major works include Mahabharata – Nalacharitam” and “Antigone” (directed by MIYAGI Satoshi). She is also busy holding workshops in elementary schools and foster homes. She is a one-of-a-kind person who did not undergo any formal music education, being somewhat of an “outsider artist” in this area.

Ms. KITAMURA is a choreographer, dancer and director. Her background includes ballet, street dance, and Indonesian martial arts. She founded her dance company, Leni Basso, in 1994 while studying the Graduate School of Letters, Arts, and Sciences at Waseda University, from where she also received her MA. She stayed in Berlin as a trainee of the Agency for Cultural Affairs Overseas Training Program for Artists in 1995. Since her return to Japan, she has been implementing her own theory of choreography, the Grid System, and her own directing style that mixes and develops dancing, light, rhythm and image.
She was commissioned to present her work at the 2001 Bates Dance Festival_and_2003 American Dance Festival (ADF) in the United States. The “enact oneself” that she choreographed for the ADF, was selected the Best Dance of the Year in North Carolina. One of Kitamura’s masterpieces, titled “finks” (2001), has been performed in more than 60 cities internationally and awarded Best Dance Piece of the Year by the Montreal Hour Magazine in 2005. She also created “ghostly round” for Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin which was highly esteemed in many countries globally.
In 2010, Ms. KITAMURA started her solo career and engaged in international co-production projects including “To Belong” with Indonesia and “Cross Transit” with South East and South Asian countries. These productions were also performed at the Japan Society in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and many other cities. Moreover, the “vox soil” presented in 2018_and_first performed at the Kanagawa Arts Theatre (KAAT), won the 13th Japan Dance Forum (JaDaFo) Awards Grand Prix. In 2020, she started a project titled “Echoes of Calling,” crossing the borders of Ireland, Central Asia and Japan.
Ms. KITAMURA studies ‘the use of the human body as a medium’ in practical theatre, applying theories about the human body, direction, and dancing. Based on ‘physical thinking’ through the spread and deepening of dance expression, she keeps looking for the appeal of human bodies and the good communication generated from creative activities and art performance.

The Tale of Komachi Told by the Wind

イ・ユンテクBorn in Busan, Korea in 1952. As a poet, playwright, theatre director and scriptwriter he engages in artistic activities that branch in all directions. In 1986 he founded his theatre troupe, “Theater troupe georipae” (TTG) and has since gone on to earn numerous prestigious Korean Theatre awards. Currently based in Miryang, he has built the Miryang Theatre Village, which is the base for all TTG company members. Within this theatre community, he works with his company and continues to carry out writing activities and experiment with theatre. His performances, created using his own distinctive as well as traditional theatrical methods, are internationally renowned. He has been invited several times for Spring Arts Festival Shizuoka. And he has directed “Robinson and Crusoe” for SPAC since 2008.

Introduction

“Sublime” or “vulgar”?
OHTA Shogo’s world is revived.
Hear an effusive cry that comes from the soul!

OHTA Shogo occupies a unique position in the Japanese underground theatre movement. “The Tale of Komachi told by the wind” by OHTA is the work that won KISHIDA Drama Award and is characterized by the protagonist, an old woman, that does not speak a word. The work itself has a script that has been written down, however these are “unspoken words” that, for the characters, are “words they hope to emit from the bottom of their hearts”. Instead of words prone to stereotypes, clichés or fixed ideas, extremely slow bodily movements are used. The word “silent drama” is often used to describe OHTA’s works which represent the realness of human life. It is also the true value of OHTA, who ran with the age of the Japanese underground theatre movement.

Japanese-Korean cultural relations are intricate.
Finally realized in this work,
A new Asian stage.

Theatre troupe georipae are known for their “epic realism” and their very distinctive style. The theatre company director, LEE Yuntaek, is a master of Korean theatre. He has attracted many audiences in Shizuoka with his masterpieces, such as “Robinson and Crusoe” at SPAC. In this work he uses colorful elements of Korean traditional performing arts, including Deotboikki (Korean traditional performing form that includes masks dancing), Namdo Sori (southern folk song) and the shaman ritual ceremony “Gut”, giving a new breath of life to OHTA Shogo’s text and unleashing the words that were never spoken. A mutual exchange as well as a fusion of Japanese and Korean culture, it could be said that this is the birth of a new kind of Asian performing arts.

Synopsis

The story of an old woman who lives alone in a cheap apartment. Awaking and making a breakfast of instant noodles, she remembers a love story in her youth. At one point, her memory is strongly revived when a captain, dressed in military uniform, who once loved her deeply and with passion, appears before her very eyes. Next, in her illusion, she enjoys a number of intense, silent and secret love meetings with a neighboring house’s son. However reality begins to erode this old woman’s world. Floating in the space between dreams and reality, an ambiguous amount of time passes and in the end the old woman is left alone once again.

MIYAGI Satoshi

General Artistic Director of Shizuoka Performing Arts Center (SPAC)
Born in Tokyo in 1959, after studying aesthetics at Tokyo University under ODASHIMA Yushi, WATANABE Moriaki and HIDAKA Hachiro, he founded the KU NA’ UKA theater company in 1990 and soon began staging plays overseas as well as in Japan. As a result, MIYAGI’s work — in which he often fuses contemporary textual interpretations with physical techniques and patterns of Asian theatre — has long been acclaimed both at home and far abroad. Indeed, in 2004 he received the 3rd Asahi Performing Arts Award, and the next year the 2nd Asahi Beer Art Award.
Since taking up his position with SPAC in April 2007, MIYAGI has staged many of his own works — including “Medea”, the Hindu epic “Mahabharata”, and “Peer Gynt” — and has invited artists from abroad to present pieces casting a keen eye on the modern world as they see it. In line with his aim to make theatre “a window to the world,” he has also started a new SPAC-based project aimed at the youth of Shizuoka.
In 2014, MIYAGI was invited to the Festival d’Avignon, where he received excellent reviews for his open-air version of the Hindu epic “Mahabharata” staged in La Carrière de Boulbon. Following that landmark achievement, the festival extended the honor of inviting MIYAGI to present a Buddhist interpretation he created of the ancient Greek mythological tragedy “Antigone” as its super-prestigious opening program for 2017. On that occasion, which was the first time an Asian play had ever been selected to launch the festival, MIYAGI’s exalted “stage” was the open-air Cour d’honneur du Palais des papes (the Honor Court of the Palace of Popes). By the play’s end, those towering medieval stone walls were ringing out with long and splendid standing ovations welcoming the work’s director and creator along with SPAC’s actors and staff — while more than 60 European media all gave great reviews.
In 2018, he received the 68th Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize of Drama. Also he recieved “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” from the Ministry of Culture of France in 2018.

 
Olivier PY
Playwright, director and actor. Born in 1965 in Grasse (France). He studied theatre at the Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique (CNSAD) in Paris, and theology and philosophy at l’Institut Catholique (Catholic University of Paris). He was Director of the Centre Dramatique National/Orléans-Loiret-Centre from 1998-2007, Director of the Théâtre national de l’Odéon from 2007–12 and of the Festival d’Avignon (2013–). Among his major works performed in Shizuoka between 2008–16 have been “Illusions Comiques,” “Epitre aux jeunes acteurs,” “Grimm’s Fairy Tales” (trilogy), “Romeo and Juliet Unabridged Version,” “Miss Knife chante Olivier PY” and “The Girl, the Devil and the Mill.”

A Reimagining of The Good Person of Szechwan

WATANABE Takahiko gives his own take of Bertolt Brecht’s play

The gods descend to Human world search of good people. The play follows Rita, a woman from a ghetto, who arranges accommodations for the gods. Having received money in return, she starts her own business. In the fable The Good Person of Szechwan, Brecht portrayed the modern world where every person wears a mask of cruelty and greed to survive. WATANABE Takahiko, a renowned SPAC actor who has also recently started a career as a stage producer, boldly rewrites the play with a new narrative, depicting the main character Shen Teh and her alter ego Shui Ta as symbols of altruism and egoism.

WATANABE Takahiko
“I want to create a stage that is cruel, beautiful, tragic, and comedic all at the same time.”
An acting wizard with experience playing a vast range of characters on different platforms, ranging from theatre stages and contemporary dance and Butoh to films and TV series. He joined SPAC in 2010 and has appeared in Mahabharata, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Antigone, and many other programs. In 2016, he staged The Hunchback of Aomori. He was awarded the Best Theatre Artists’ Prize in the 2009 TOGA Theatre Artists’ Competition.

Peer Gynts – Asylum’s Dreams

Modern Asia portrayed in Peer Gynts
—A journey to find your true identity in a challenging era

Leading edge Indonesian stage producer Yudi Ahmad Tajudin found a portrait of modern Asia in the story of the ever-wandering traveler Peer. Japanese dancer KAWAGUCHI Takao, composer MORINAGA Yasuhiro, and SPAC actor Micari join other artists from across Asia for the creating-while-traveling process of the play, moving from Indonesia to Tokyo to Shizuoka. Other SPAC actors will also join to launch the stage in Shizuoka.

Yudi Ahmad Tajudin
is founding member and artistic director of Teater Garasi/Garasi Performance Institute -an artist initiative and inter-disciplinary artist collective based in Yogyakarta-Indonesia and a 2013 Prince Claus Award Laureate. Yudi’s performing art works have been performed on international stages in Indonesia, Singapore, Germany and Japan. He has been involved in intercultural collaboration works with many noted theatre groups and artists, and interdisciplinary projects — dance, visual-art, music and contemporary opera. Known as a cutting edge director who has brought Indonesia’s theater scene to the next aesthetic level, Yudi was granted an ‘Art Award 2014’ from Ministry of Culture, Indonesia, and received Asian Cultural Council fellowship to study New York theatre scene in 2011-2012.

MIYAGI Satoshi’s Legendary Comedy Stage Is Coming Back!

Originally written by playwright KITAMURA So, Ode to Joy has long been praised as a monumental work in the history of Japanese modern performing arts. The plot takes place in a fictional suburban city in western Japan that has just come out of a nuclear war. While left-over missiles are still flying overhead, a strolling entertainer, Gesaku, a young lady, Kyoko, and a mysterious man, Yasuo, wander together in the city, singing and dancing to chindon music and indulging in comic discourse. This masterpiece, which sold out the seats of Open Air Theatre “UDO” of the Shizuoka Performing Arts Park last spring, is making its comeback at SPAC! What will the three wanderers see at the end of their journey?

Following that landmark achievement, the festival extended the honor of inviting MIYAGI to present a Buddhist interpretation he created of the ancient Greek mythological tragedy “Antigone” as its super-prestigious opening program for 2017. On that occasion, which was the first time an Asian play had ever been selected to launch the festival, MIYAGI’s exalted “stage” was the open-air Cour d’honneur du Palais des papes (the Honor Court of the Palace of Popes). By the play’s end, those towering medieval stone walls were ringing out with long and splendid standing ovations welcoming the work’s director and creator along with SPAC’s actors and staff — while more than 60 European media all gave great reviews.
In 2018, he received the 68th Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize of Drama. Also he recieved “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” from the Ministry of Culture of France in 2018.

 
KITAMURA So
Now aged 65, KITAMURA So is one of Japan’s leading playwrights, novelists and essayists. Back in the 1980s, however, he drew lots of attention as a leading figure in this country’s so-called “small-scale theatre movement” with his masterpiece Hogiuta (Ode to Joy) that premiered in 1979 and has been performed continuously as a modern classic since then.
In 1984, KITAMURA won the prestigious 28th Kishida Drama Award with his play 11 Nin no Shonen (Eleven Boys), and followed that in 1990 with the Kinokuniya Theatre Awards for Yuki wo Watatte Dai ni ko Tsuki no Akarusa (Pass over snow: The Second Draft; Moonlight). Since 2013 he has written a new series of original plays based on classic works of Japanese literature. The first of these, titled Goodbye and based on the great novelist DAZAI Osamu’s eponymous unfinished novel, won the 17th Tsuruya Nanboku Drama Award in 2014.
Since 1996, meanwhile, as part of his longstanding effort to foster the talents of young writers, KITAMURA has also delivered lectures at Ai Hall, the public theatre in Itami City, Hyogo Prefecture, in a series titled “So’s private lesson in Itami on how to write a play.”

Romeo and Juliet

“The universally recognized masterpiece of tragic romance, artfully crafted under the superb direction of Mr. Omar PORRAS.”

Mr. Porras is known for the work he does in integrating the classical with the modern, and the oriental culture with that of the west. He has already shocked and awed audience members with his production of “Don Juan” by using unique and individualized masks to tremendous effect. He also captivated audiences with his production of “Bolivar, Fragments of a Dream” set in the wilderness of South America. Now, the eclectic and eccentric Mr. Porras has the challenge of conjuring up a rendition of Shakespeare’s classic masterpiece, Romeo and Juliet.

As for the performers, not only does the cast list boast a great many veteran actors from SPAC, but it also includes talented english, french and québécois actors from Mr. Porras’s own theatre company, Teatro Melandro. These actors must overcome both linguistic and theatrical boundaries as they strive to create harmony within a production riddled with styles ranging from Latin rhythm to traditional Japanese dance.

While the show is currently only scheduled for a run in Shizuoka, there are already several theaters that have expressed an interest in mounting the show in Europe once this run closes. So, who knows where this fresh, new production might wind up!
